Charity
Ambika charity is being setup in order to raise funds primarily for a large project in India for children and orphans. Alongside this, a percentage of the funds raised will remain in the UK and be distributed between domestic charities.
Our aim is to raise £3m over the next 5 years.
The Ambika Charity proposes to buy land & build the following
• Orphanage
• School
• Hospital
• Farm
• Adult sanctuary
This will all become self-sufficient over time, with sale of food from the farm and a small B&B. Teachers, doctors, medical staff and other volunteers will give their time and services to benefit the residents and locals.
The trustees will be appointed in due course and charities commission registration is pending.
The other charities that will be involved are
• United Kingdom Association of Milk Banking
• Great Ormand Street Hospital
• The Gesundheit! Institute
• World Wildlife Fund
The breakdown of the funds will be 50% to Ambika and the remainder to be divided equally between the other charities.
Funds will be raised via events, dinners, call centres, sponsorship and theatre shows.
Ambika365 Charity came about, after Tej travelled to India from a young age on vacation and spent 2 years studying and working there in 2002. Through all this time he saw many people who were far worse off than those in the west. Orphans and elderly alike forced into begging, sleeping on streets, being beaten and mutilated, by those they were reporting to. 12 to sixteen year old children looking after their own siblings or someone else’s handed to them by the neighbourhood bosses.
If money was given to these people, they would have to give it away and they would still go hungry. Tej inevitably always bought them a meal or supplies they could use.
Some families were lucky they may have a room [2.5m by 2.5m] in a shanty town, where a family of 9 would sleep. This was their bathroom, living room and kitchen. They may have had a job, but most of the time they could not afford any kind of medical care.
Tej also had an elder sister who died a mere few hours after she was born in 1973 [two years before he was born], as sister he had never met. If there were medical advances then as there are now, she may have survived.
This baby was never named, only a certificate with NAME: Baby Virdee. Tej and his elder sister took it upon themselves to name her Ambika.
In 2004, Tej decided to do something and set about trying to find ways of setting up something to make a difference. Finding out a lot of charities took huge portions of their money raised were used up in administration and paying executive salaries
He wanted to make sure the money raised by the charity was used correctly and went to the right places and people.
In 2009, he saw the movie Patch Adams [starring Robin Williams] and realised that Patch had already done what he wanted to do, many years before in the USA. In 2011 he contacted The Gesundheit! Institute where he spoke to one of Patch’s team who expressed an interest in what he was doing and encouraged him to take it further.
Since then, things have moved forward, having spoken to Great Ormond Street Hospital and to The United Kingdom Association for Milk Banking who are also interested in working with Ambika365 Charity. Have a love and soft spot for animals as well and supporting the World Wildlife Fund from a very young age, they have also been involved.
Currently we are looking for patrons and volunteers.
